Background of the Study:
Traditional diviners in Ohaozara Local Government have historically occupied influential positions in community decision-making processes. These diviners, who use ancestral wisdom and spiritual practices to interpret events, play a crucial role in mediating conflicts, guiding community actions, and preserving indigenous cultural values (Nwankwo, 2023). Their counsel is often sought in matters ranging from agriculture to social disputes, reflecting a deep-rooted trust in traditional methods of foretelling and decision-making. However, modernization and the rise of formal governance structures have challenged the authority of these diviners, raising questions about their contemporary relevance (Obi, 2024). This study examines the role of traditional diviners in community decision-making, exploring how their influence persists despite modern administrative systems and what implications this has for cultural continuity (Anyanwu, 2025).

Statement of the Problem:
Traditional diviners in Ohaozara face diminishing authority as modern decision-making processes take precedence. This shift threatens the continuity of indigenous advisory roles and may lead to the loss of culturally embedded conflict resolution methods. The study investigates the challenges and opportunities for traditional diviners in current governance contexts (Nwankwo, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the role of traditional diviners in community decision-making.

  2. To identify challenges faced by diviners in modern governance.

  3. To recommend measures for preserving the influence of traditional divination.

Research Questions:

  1. What roles do traditional diviners play in decision-making in Ohaozara?

  2. What challenges limit their influence in modern governance?

  3. How can traditional divination be preserved within contemporary decision-making frameworks?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Traditional diviners significantly influence community decision-making.

  2. Modern governance structures reduce the perceived authority of diviners.

  3. Community initiatives can sustain the role of traditional diviners.

Significance of the Study:
This study provides valuable insights into the integration of traditional divination within modern governance. Its findings will assist in developing culturally sensitive policies that acknowledge and preserve indigenous decision-making roles (Nwankwo, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to Ohaozara Local Government, Ebonyi State, focusing solely on the role of traditional diviners in decision-making. Limitations include reliance on qualitative narratives and cultural sensitivities.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Traditional Diviners: Indigenous practitioners who provide guidance and foresight through spiritual means.

  2. Decision-Making: The process of making choices or reaching conclusions, especially in community matters.

  3. Modern Governance: Contemporary administrative systems based on formal, bureaucratic structures.
